Interview

with FOUR PAWS

What is FOUR PAWS and what goals does the organisation pursue?

FOUR PAWS is a global animal welfare organisation that campaigns for animals under direct human influence. The aim is to create a world in which people treat animals with respect, compassion and understanding. The organisation operates offices and sanctuaries in various countries to provide rapid assistance and long-term solutions for animals in need. Sustainable campaigns focus on domestic, wild and farm animals in inappropriate conditions as well as in disaster and conflict areas.

What is the connection between animal welfare and sustainability?

The link between animal welfare and sustainability can be seen in the production of textiles that use animal materials. To reduce harmful effects on the environment and animals companies should introduce sustainable methods. This includes the ethical and environmentally friendly sourcing of materials such as wool, down and leather.

To what extent can an animal welfare policy support and prioritize the well-being of animals?

In the textile industry an effective animal welfare policy can help to improve abuses in the husbandry of "utilised" animals. Companies should commit to regular inspections and improvements in animal welfare standards. This signals willingness to change and also has a positive influence on the entire supply chain. Therefore we worked in conjunction with Peek & Cloppenburg and provided guidance to the company in developing its Animal Welfare Policy.

What should companies keep in mind when ordering fibres of animal origin?

When sourcing animal-based materials, textile companies should ensure a verifiable animal welfare standard and be able to trace the entire supply chain back to the final product. Reliable certification initiatives are crucial to counteract unethical practices and ensure transparency for consumers.

Does FOUR PAWS see changes in customer attitudes towards animal welfare and animal products in the textile industry?

Consumers are increasingly critical of the impact their fashion consumption has on animals and the planet. Companies need to address these concerns as, according to a 2021 survey by FOUR PAWS, 86% of respondents in the EU, UK, South Africa and Australia see animal welfare as a top priority.

What options do customers have to improve animal welfare?

Customers can contribute to animal welfare through their conscious consumption. When shopping, consumers should make sure to buy clothing that is free from animal-based materials. Biobased or recycled fibres are good alternative options. In addition to recycled materials, economical washing and the use of microfibre washing bags also have a positive impact on sustainability. Someone who takes good care of their wool sweater, for example, will enjoy it for years and also has a positive impact on sustainability. Customers should not only communicate in their personal environment, but also to companies that animal-friendly fashion is important to them.
